Maximising luggage space is a big part of planning outfits for a holiday.
Sadly, it’s not possible to bring our entire wardrobe (and even if we could it would only slow us down, right?). That’s why focusing on a select few pieces that you can mix and match makes the most sense.
That said, there are always certain types of outfits that tend to work for every holiday. No matter where you’re going, how long for and the time of year, you’ll likely need the following.
Adventure-Ready
Let’s face it, humans are natural explorers. So, when we’re in a new environment, we’re going to completely immerse ourselves.
Whether you’re sightseeing in a new city or hiking nature trails in the wilderness, practical and comfortable clothes are a must. And if they’re made from lightweight, breathable and moisture-wicking fabrics then that’s even better!
Layers are key for regulating your body temperature, as is footwear that can withstand hours of wear without causing pain. Don’t forget a durable backpack, and a hat for sun protection or a woolly hat to keep your head warm depending on the weather.
Remember to focus on function without compromising style if you can; you want to be ready for everything. If you’re not in the camp that plans out their full itinerary prior to every trip (that’s me), take at least a couple of outfits like this in your suitcase to be fully prepared.

Lounging Bliss
Even if your holiday is likely to be busy and active, at some point, you’re going to want to relax. You also have to think about what you’ll wear to travel in on those long bus, train or plane journeys.
This is where taking loungewear or activewear works so well.
Think soft, stretchy fabrics like a cotton and elastane or nylon blend. In terms of items, leggings, joggers, oversized sweatshirts and jersey jumpsuits that you can throw on and fall asleep in are ideal. Most of these you can wear a couple of times without worrying about washing. (Save it until you get home!)
When it comes to footwear, trainers or sliders are easy to put on and the most comfortable options. Short on time or don’t have the energy to style your hair? Throw on a sports cap for an effortlessly chic look.

Evening Elegance
Some holidays are just for chilling and/or exploring. But, the majority of the time, you’ll add in a fancy dinner or night on the town where you want to look your best.
Consider taking those smart-casual pieces that can instantly dress up an outfit without being too bulky to pack. I’m talking about a black blazer, faux leather jacket or a satin midi skirt.
Or, to avoid taking multiple items, a maxi, midi or mini dress works perfectly — and will fold up small in your suitcase. Win-win.
If you can’t afford to take any extra clothing, accessories are your best friend. A plain cami and shorts combo can look elevated with chunky earrings, layered necklaces or even body jewellery.
Similarly, an oversized jumper dress and sheer tights can be belted for a pretty, polished aesthetic. Then there are sunglasses for levelling up your daytime ‘fits.
There’s also a lot to be said for hair and makeup. Curling your hair gives off a glam vibe even if you’re just wearing jeans and a tee. (I swear by the overnight heatless curls that are super popular at the moment, and they’re so easy to do!)
When it comes to makeup, a full face isn’t necessarily needed. A bold lip or sparkly eyeshadow adds a touch of luxe and only takes a couple of minutes.

Preserving Your Travel Wardrobe
Are you flying abroad? Check your airline’s website for baggage restrictions. I always advise to take a bag that’s bigger than what you’ve got to put in it. It’s good to have extra room for souvenirs and anything you want to buy in your final destination.
Another reason for this is that you don’t have to cram in all your clothing, causing pieces to get creased and crumpled before you’ve even had the chance to wear them.
Packing cubes are a lifesaver. You can fit lots of items in one cube without having to stuff them in or overload. These are the ones I swear by from Amazon*.
Likewise, if you do have a few smart-casual occasions planned, a hand-held steamer* is a useful tool for getting out creases on the other end of your journey. Clothes always look more expensive when they’re clean and wrinkle-free.
