The start of a new year marks a fresh start for many and it can provide you with the motivation you need to go through your wardrobe and assess your existing pieces. Good-quality basics are investments that can last for years but often get neglected when it comes to updating your wardrobe every season.
For example, it’s much more alluring to go for a trend-driven skirt or a seasonal hero piece like a winter coat. However, consider that old basics may need replacing because they’ve been worn or washed so much that they are falling apart.
I recently got a shock when I pulled out my thermals for my recent trip to New York and saw bobbling and split seams. But it’s not just thermals. Here are 5 basics in your wardrobe that may need overhauling this year.
Ready? Let’s go!
The Benefits of Overhauling Your Wardrobe
First things first, let’s be honest. There’s a strange satisfaction in looking at what you already own and seeing how you can make improvements.
If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably forgotten what you own and it’s good to remind yourself so you can get the most out of your items. (What’s the point in something being sat in your wardrobe for years and never being used?)
Other benefits of overhauling your wardrobe are:
- You can get things tidy and organised (and wow, does this feel good, especially as we head into a new year)
- You’re able to sell those items you don’t use or need replacing on Vinted, or similar (one person’s trash is another person’s treasure!)
- You can also gift items to loved ones or charity shops (which also has the feel-good factor)
- You can make room for things you are going to use (and if you only have a small house like me, this really helps!)
I just love overhauling my wardrobe at least once a year so I’d encourage you to do the same. You just can’t beat a good clear-out!
Key Basics to Overhaul in Your Wardrobe
Without further ado, let’s take a look at those basics in your wardrobe that may need replacing more often than other items because they get worn so much.
1. Lingerie
First up, when was the last time you thought about replacing your lingerie? Most people don’t change it up unless their pants or bras have holes in them or their size has altered enough to warrant it.
Whether it’s sexy lingerie or your everyday comfies, ensure you have a collection that is high in quality and comfortable to make you feel your best and most confident self. After all, every amazing outfit starts with great underwear!
2. Socks
As with lingerie, if you’re only buying socks when they have holes in them, that’s a problem. You should feel comfortable when moving around as much as possible, and new socks can help you do just that!
You need socks for all areas of life, from winter socks thick enough to feel like you’re walking on clouds, to thinner trainer socks that disappear under the shoe. Either way, new pairs will be beneficial for your wardrobe and can upgrade it in a moment.
3. Walking Shoes
Speaking of moving around, if your New Year’s resolution is to get out there and walk more, then upgrading your sneakers to walking boots is one great way to overhaul your wardrobe. Walking sandals are also an option for the summer months to truly let your feet breathe.
Either way, adding something sturdy to your shoe cupboard designed for hiking will help you level up your collection and pay off for years to come.
4. Thermals
It’s January, you need to keep warm and if you are spending a lot of time out of the house in nature, upgrading new thermals (as I’ve just done) can be a game-changer. Or, thermals are an essential for a winter vacation or ski trip, so make sure they’re up to scratch.
Opt for good-quality thermal tops and bottoms to stay comfortable in the chilly temperatures and avoid freezing your butt off. You won’t regret it.
5. Layering Tops
Lastly, we all have those tops in our wardrobes that serve as fab layering pieces, no matter what the time of year. I’m talking about those long-sleeve neutral tops in winter under jumpers and coats, and black or white vest tops and camis in summer paired with cute skirts and shorts (sometimes with a light cardigan or jacket).
Are yours wearable or do they have stains under the armpits? (Hey, it happens to the best of us.) Make sure these items are going strong to last you for the many months ahead.

Final Thoughts on How to Overhaul Your Wardrobe
They say ‘out with the old, in with the new’ as soon as January rolls around — so, if it makes sense, why not do that with your wardrobe? It’s up to you to assess how much wear each item has left and whether you can afford to update it right now.
Either way, an overhaul every now and again does your wardrobe good so you can maximise each item. It can take some time and effort but it’s worth it in the end. Ultimately, having good-quality items in an outfit can make it feel more comfortable and look more expensive! Win-win.
