There’s a summer staple that’s doing the rounds on the style scene. It’s loose, floaty and effortless to wear in the warmer months. And when teamed with the right accessories, it looks so elegant and timeless.
Step forward, the midi dress.
One of my favourite summer pieces and travel fashion staples, I love how comfortable and confident a midi dress makes me feel as a midsize girlie.
But, what is a midi dress? How is it best worn to attract the most compliments? And what are some of the most beautiful midi dresses of the moment?
Not to worry, bestie. I’m here to answer all your questions in this guide to the cute and versatile midi dress.

What Is a Midi Dress?
First things first, what is a midi dress exactly? Simply put, it’s a dress that has a midi length. In other words, it doesn’t go to the floor (that’s a maxi) but it doesn’t sit below the knee either (that’s a mini).
Essentially, the hem of a midi dress falls between your knee and ankle, and can be worn day or night and dressed up or down depending on the occasion.
Why Is the Midi Dress a Summer Staple?
The great thing about a midi dress is it lets your legs breathe, which is especially handy in hot temperatures.
Fitted versions are ideal for a night out or bottomless brunch outfit if it’s not too toasty outside. Whereas, loose, tiered designs are my go-to for daytime chic in the Spring/Summer season.
I especially love the on-trend puffed sleeve styles that have a waistband to draw you in at the waist and flatter your silhouette. Opt for neutral colours, like black or white, to elevate your look.
Neutrals are also more versatile as they can be mixed and matched with different coloured accessories and layers. They will also never go out of style so your investment will go further.
Having said that, I am partial to a unique colour or playful print, especially the dreamy florals and bold stripes we’re seeing a lot at the moment.
How to Style a Midi Dress
Midi dresses are classed as a statement piece so they don’t need much styling to look spectacular. In fact, you should let them stand out and do the talking by keeping the rest of your outfit minimal.
Shoes
Sandals are a perfect partner in summer, whether they’re heeled for a dressy event or flat for everyday wear. Alternatively, if it’s a little cooler outside, you can get away with ankle boots or even knee-highs.
Trainers can dress down a midi dress for running errands or shopping. However, these may be a little sweaty when temperatures are rising.
Layers
A neutral midi dress is effortlessly fabulous with neutral layers like:
- A white, black or beige shirt
- A white, blue or black denim jacket
- A beige or black faux leather jacket
Are you a fan of colour? You could add a pop of a vivid, gorgeous hue through one of the above layers for a richer colour palette that would perfectly complement lush greenery and a clear blue sky.
Alternatively, if you opt for a colourful midi dress, use a neutral layer to soften the aesthetic.
Accessories
If your midi dress doesn’t already have a waistband, consider adding a waistbelt to give more shape to this key piece. Again, stick to neutral hues like black, white and tan to keep your outfit looking luxe.
In terms of jewellery, most midi dresses are super attractive with layered necklaces, hooped earrings and stacked rings. The good news is, you don’t have to wear many pieces to look polished and well put together.
Some midi dresses may not even call for a necklace, or may be better suited to statement earrings for dressier occasions.
Hair accessories can also be cute with a midi dress, whether it’s a fun headband or a couple of sparkly clips. It all depends on the vibe you’re going for.
