There’s nothing quite like breaking out of the everyday and going on a backpacking trip.
A quick city break can be fun and a week-long holiday in the sun can be just what you need to relax. However, being away for multiple months at a time, travelling around whole countries and experiencing new cultures can enhance your personal development and mental state like nothing else.
Not to mention, all that fresh air and moving around is extremely beneficial for your physical health.
The problem is, packing for up to a few months at a time can be tricky. But forget the walking shoes and day-to-day clothes for a minute, because no decision is more important than what backpack you’ll take with you. After all, let’s be honest — using the same pack for months at a time is a big commitment!
So without further ado, here’s my tried and tested guide to how to choose a backpack for travelling that’s as comfortable as it is practical.

How to Choose a Backpack for Travelling
Make no mistake — choosing a backpack for travelling is no easy feat. From size and material to quality and function, there’s a lot to consider. And that’s before you factor in comfort levels.
I’ve got your back(pack) though. (Ahem, sorry.) Let’s explore all the things you should look out for.
Size
It might sound obvious but make sure to take into account that the larger the backpack, the heavier it will be.
Basically, you want to be able to fit in everything you want to with ease, but without so much space that you end up overpacking and feeling weighed down the whole trip. It’s all about finding the right balance for you and your body.
Form
In addition to size, be aware of the shape of your backpack. Some can be a very awkward shape which makes some of the space very tricky to use.
You’ll probably find that something more square will give you the most usable space but overall whatever space you have has to be as efficient as possible.
It’s also well worth looking for a backpack with a padded hip belt. Not only will this help in distributing the weight of the backpack through your back, but it will also reduce strain and fatigue.
Bonus points if your chosen backpack includes padded shoulder straps, which will ease tension on your shoulders and the rest of your back. A sternum strap will also help distribute the weight of the bag throughout your back to prevent any unwanted aches or pains.
Material
Water Resistance
How to choose a backpack for travelling 101: always opt for water-resistant material.
Remember, you’ll be carrying everything with you — I’m talking important documents, technology and money. Therefore, it’s a good idea to have a bag that is at least water-resistant. Waterproof models will cost more and aren’t exactly necessary if you’re just planning on using your pack for day trips.
Water-resistant, however, will ensure you have the protection to get through light rain or showers without damaging the contents of your bag.
Fabric
The main fabrics you’ll come across when looking for a backpack are nylon, polyester and sailcloth.
As a reliably strong and durable fabric, nylon is always a safe bet. It comes in different forms of weaves. A common variation is rip-stop nylon, which has large square weaves that will help stop a tear from spreading.
While it might seem more affordable on the surface, backpacks made of polyester tend to be of low quality. By nature, polyester isn’t very durable and will break down much faster than other choices.
Another material you may come across on your search for the perfect backpack is sailcloth. As it’s the same material used on sailboats, you can expect it to be lightweight and waterproof. That said, it doesn’t tend to hold up as well as nylon. And of course, due to it not being as common as other fabrics, it will naturally be more expensive.
For certain fabrics, you may see a number followed by the letter D. This tells you the thickness of the fabric, so the higher the number, the thicker and stronger the material. Just keep in mind that thicker material equals a heavier pack.
Function
Next on the agenda of how to choose a backpack for travelling — function. You can choose between a top loader model or a panel loader (also known as a clamshell).
A clamshell backpack will give you more flexibility with regards to access. As a blend of a backpack and a suitcase, it will be easy to pack and subsequently find things in your pack.
Meanwhile, the clue’s in the name — by choosing a top loader, you’ll only be able to access your belongings from the top.
While it can be hard to access your items (especially those lurking right at the bottom), it does mean there’s less of a chance that the pack will open through broken zippers. You win some, you lose some.
Anti Theft
Another thing to consider is investing in a backpack made of anti-slash material. Certain fabrics are tougher than others. Though no fabric is fully slash-proof, there are backpacks available to buy that will help deter thieves.
A handy anti-theft feature to look out for is lockable zippers which can help stop an unzip-and-grab thief in their tracks.
It’s also worth looking into RFID blocking material (RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification Devices). The scary truth is that contactless cards can be hijacked by thieves via wireless skimming devices. Luckily, RFID blocking material can block these devices from taking card information. Phew.
