We all know the struggles of holiday hair. The weather’s hot, your hair’s making you feel even hotter and you need it out of your face and neck pronto before you get seriously agitated. Right?
Finding the right holiday hairstyle that looks good, is easy to do and lasts all day can be tough. You want to be able to put in the minimal effort for the maximum impact when you’re chilling around the pool or on the beach. I get it.
Fortunately, I’ve got you covered with these 7 easy vacation hairstyles that will mix up your look without making you feel flustered.
1. Model Bun
Spotted all over TikTok, the model bun is a slicked-back, clean hairstyle that celebs like Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Molly Mae love. It’s a more modern take on the usual bun — rather than scraping your hair completely away from your face, you add a little parting at the front.
The two great things about this hairstyle? Firstly, it’s super easy to do and secondly, it works best when your hair isn’t squeaky clean.
All you need is some mousse*, a hair bobble, comb or brush and some hair pins to secure. You might want to straighten your hair before you start but this is totally up to you.
Begin by running a blob of mousse through your hair to make it easier to handle. Section your hair into two parts, leaving the top loose and pinned out of the way. Brush the bottom of your hair into a bun and secure with the bobble. Then part the top of your hair, smooth down and pin into your bun.
Voilà — easy vacation hairstyle done!
2. Bubble Pigtails
This is one of those easy vacation hairstyles that is ideal for hitting the beach, heading to a festival or going for a few drinks by the pool. It’s a more grown-up version of pigtails that will attract attention for the right reasons, wherever you’re headed.
All you need for this hairstyle are some small hair bobbles* — clear ones or matching ones are the easiest, or you can go all out with some bright neon ones. Grab a brush and a bit of hairspray for hold.
It works best with long hair. However, you can always add some clip in extensions or a ponytail to get the look.
- Part your hair in the middle and pull each side of your hair into a high pigtail.
- Combine the pigtail with the rest of your hair.
- Start to add in hair bobbles to split your pigtails into equal sections all the way.
That’s all there is to it.
3. Fishtail Braid
A fishtail braid takes a little bit of practice. That said, once you get the hang of it, it’s one of those easy vacation hairstyles that takes you from day to night.
Either add your braid at the back of your head or try it as a braid at the side of your hair.
Luckily, you only need minimal tools to get this style right, such as a hair bobble, brush and bit of patience. You might want to add a spritz of hairspray at the end but this is a more relaxed hairstyle that doesn’t need to look too neat.
Pull your hair into a ponytail, but don’t secure it with anything, and split it into two equal pieces of hair. Then split these sections into two equal pieces and start to braid, moving the outer section over to the opposite side and vice versa. It sounds complicated but this TikTok serves as the perfect demonstration.
After you’ve braided all the way down, pull it apart a little to make your braid thicker. Add a little hairspray and pull some looser front sections out of your braid to make it nice and relaxed.
Sounds like a lot of work or is your hair on the shorter side? Try a fishtail hair extension instead.
4. Claw Clip Pony
Whether your hair’s curly, straight or somewhere in between, this is one of those easy vacation hairstyles that works for everyone. All you need is a hair bobble, brush and a claw clip* to recreate it. You can even just use the claw clip as normal.
Section your hair into a half ponytail and secure with a hair bobble. (Leave some face-framing tendrils out at the front to soften the look).
Proceed to position the claw clip under your half ponytail for added volume. This stops your half-up hair from falling flat and helps to keep you cooler in those soaring temperatures.
5. Space Buns
Space buns is a super cute hairstyle that removes hair out of your face so you can remain composed at the pool, beach or on a day out. It’s ideal for straight or curly hair.
If you feel like your buns need a little va-va voom then adding in hair extensions* or a bun ring is worth doing.
All you need for this is a brush or a comb, bobble and some hairspray to secure. Part your hair in the middle and pull your hair into two pigtails at the top of your head. Leave some hair out at the front if you want to frame your face a little.
This is the time to integrate your hair extensions or bun ring if you need to, before wrapping your own hair around these additions and securing with a bobble. Finally, add some hairspray for extra hold.
6. Half Up Braids
The best thing about this summer hairstyle is that it’s totally versatile and effortless to put together on holiday. All you need are bobbles, a brush and some hairspray — plus whatever you need to style the back of your hair.
Follow the below steps to achieve the aesthetic:
- Part your hair in the middle
- French braid each side at the top to the back of your head (grab a helpful friend if you’re struggling to see the top of your hair)
- Secure each braid with a clear bobble
Then it’s up to you in terms of what you want to do with the hair that’s left over, whether that’s carrying on the braids, putting it in a bun or ponytail or leaving it loose.
7. Y2K Butterfly Clips
Now this is a throwback! In case you missed the memo, Y2K style has returned for Spring/Summer 2022 and it’s bringing back all sorts of memories. Case in point: this hairstyle where mini butterfly clips are used to clip hair away from the front of the face.
The great thing about this style is that it will keep you looking and feeling cool, it’s on trend, and it works for any type of hair.
Just grab some butterfly clips* and start taking sections away from the front of your hair to clip back. Try to spread them out evenly and get them at the same point of your head so it looks balanced out.
So simple, yet so effective.
