Those declining temperatures, gloomy days and urges to reach for the knitwear can only mean one thing: autumn is here once again.
With this new season comes new style trends straight from the Autumn/Winter 2022/23 catwalks. If you’re a fashion fanatic like me, you’re probably super excited.
That said, no one says you have to buy brand-new stuff to refresh your wardrobe. The great thing about trends is that they always come back around, so it’s likely you already own some of the pieces that are set to be sought after until spring. (Yay!)
If so, dig them out from the back of your wardrobe now. Alternatively, you can invest in the odd one that won’t harm your bank balance too much from responsible retailers or second-hand marketplaces like eBay or Vinted. This way, your buying habits are more environmentally friendly.
Either way, the following 10 key pieces are the ones I’ll be prioritising in my capsule wardrobe this AW22.

1. Knitted Dress
I’m not sure if you’ve noticed but jumper dresses are currently everywhere, especially the maxi version that takes over a whole look (but I’m here for it!).
Grab one in a neutral colour so you can pair yours with everything, from knee-high boots to combats, and puffer coats to aviator jackets.

2. Puffer Coat
The puffer is back for AW22 and it’s more snugly than ever! Think: long, duvet-inspired styles, gilets and hooded varieties that are just as functional as they are fashionable.

3. Check Mini Skirt
Clueless is about to become your go-to reference point for all things AW22. Why? Well, because those check mini skirts are taking over the high street in a myriad of colours, patterns and styles.
Make yours the basis of your next bottomless brunch outfit complete with some knee-high boots, a fitted jumper and a blazer for preppy chic at its finest.

4. Turtleneck Jumper
A turtleneck jumper is considered a staple for any woman’s Autumn/Winter wardrobe and can ensure you stay warm and stylish even when the temperatures are dropping. (I prefer mine oversized!)
In terms of hues, neutrals are great for coordinating with any outfit colour palette but I also can’t resist a good pop of colour for brightening up a dreary day.

5. Knee-High Boots
Knee-high boots are back and fiercer than ever, adding a touch of smart-casual sophistication to any autumnal outfit. Whether you wear yours solo or under tights, leggings or skinny jeans, one thing’s for sure: they’ll be the centre of attention.

6. Dopamine Jumper
Remember the dopamine dressing trend from SS22? Well, take those bold and bright outfits and channel the same eclectic energy into one jumper for AW22.
From rainbow colours to playful patterns, wear the dopamine jumper with jeans or leggings and comfy boots to bring some sunshine to your everyday look.

7. Faux Leather Trousers
Black faux leather leggings were huge last Autumn/Winter and now their trouser counterparts are coming in hot for this season.
Perfect for bottomless brunches or date nights, I like to rock mine with a fitted long-sleeved top (or bodysuit) with a blazer, heels and plenty of attitude.

8. Knitted Co-Ord
Who doesn’t love a toasty, comfy co-ord to lounge around in during the colder months? Well, you’ll be happy to hear that knitted versions are doing the rounds, helping you to attract compliments from roommates and delivery drivers alike.
I love the neutral colours that will go with anything, so you can throw on a coat in any hue over yours to head to your local supermarket or appointment.

9. Combat Boots
Being an alternative music lover, I have always loved combat boots and was fortunate enough to finally get my first pair of Docs for my birthday this year. They are just so practical yet add a cool edge to any casual outfit.
You can’t go wrong with classic black lace-ups, but I also love the cream versions that are all over the high street at the moment.

10. Maxi Wool Coat
A wool coat is nothing groundbreaking this time of year, but the lengths have just got a whole lot more dramatic for AW22. Make sure your hemline is as long as possible for a maximalist take on this outerwear staple.
I’m loving the beige/camel hues that add a touch of chic to your daily wardrobe — even when paired with a plain black jumper, blue jeans and black ankle boots.

How to Create Outfits with Multiple AW22 Key Pieces
You could just make one of the suggested AW22 key pieces the focus of your outfit. On the other hand, you can mix and match them in the following ways for extra style points.
Knitted Dress + Knee High Boots + Maxi Wool Coat
This would create the perfect smart-casual outfit for shopping in the city, bottomless brunch or date night. Just add gold or silver jewellery, a small designer bag and tights if it’s too cold for bare legs.
Check Mini Skirt + Turtleneck Jumper + Knee High Boots
Another stunning aesthetic ideal for a fancier occasion, this combo is cute and charismatic. Add an oversized blazer to amplify the preppy aspect, or swap this for a maxi wool coat if you need some extra warmth.
Dopamine Jumper + Puffer Coat + Combat Boots
Make yourself smile every time you look in the mirror by teaming a dopamine jumper with a comfy puffer coat and stompy combat boots. This outfit is just as pretty as it is practical, especially if you wear it with jeans and a cosy beanie hat for battling the temperatures.
Faux Leather Trousers + Turtleneck Jumper + Maxi Wool Coat
This smart-casual outfit would work wonders for a cinema date, a nice meal out or pub drinks. It looks sharp without compromising on the comfort factor.
Wear yours with chunky loafers or heeled court shoes to make a serious style statement, or opt for trainers if you want to take it to a more casual level.
Knitted Co-Ord + Combat Boots + Puffer Coat
Can’t stand the thought of parting with your knitted co-ord for a trip out of the house? No problem — just throw on a puffer coat and combat boots, grab your tote bag and you’re good to go.
If combat boots sound like too much effort, Uggs are another option for that slipper feel but fashion-forward appeal.

Final Thoughts on AW22 Key Pieces
If you’re concerned about the cost of living and the environment, I totally get that you may choose to watch what you’re spending on clothes and shoes right now. The good news is, you don’t necessarily have to buy brand new to refresh your wardrobe for AW22.
Have a look at what you already have and see what you can make work this season. For example, you may not own a maxi wool coat, but you may have a wool coat that you can repurpose and re-wear. Likewise, you may already own faux leather leggings, which you can substitute for your planned faux leather trouser outfits.
Either way, my number one tip is to opt for neutral colours if you want to create timeless yet stylish outfits for AW22 and beyond.
