For those who are unaware, AW19 grunge is in the process of hitting the style scene. And personally, I couldn’t be happier about it.
Why? Well, I used to describe my personal style as “when grunge meets glam” back in my university days when I used to hang out with an alternative crowd.
Sure, the Autumn/Winter 2019/2020 shows might have brought back ALL of the nostalgic feels through this nineties-influenced movement, but they’ve also put a fresh new spin on things.
Want more details? No worries – read on for 3 ways to slay AW19 grunge.
If you’re feeling brave or you’re already a grunge fanatic, you can rock this alluring aesthetic head to toe.
Follow in the footsteps of designers such as Tom Ford, Chloe and Tommy Hilfiger and choose one key piece, like a Matrix-inspired long leather coat. Then add other grungy pieces such as ripped jeans, a graphic t-shirt and Doc Marten boots in a dark colour palette.
Why? Well, black, plum, forest green and burgundy hues will elevate this unique look, especially in the form of clashing textures like lace, leather and vinyl. I’m obsessed.
After all, if multiple designers are doing it (Roberto Cavalli, Bottega Veneta and Miuccia to name a few) then you won’t go far wrong.
Heading out for lunch or a day of shopping? A loose-fitting plaid shirt thrown on over a band t-shirt with black skinny jeans and Converse trainers easily encapsulates “grungy casual cool.”
You could even add a slouchy beanie hat or a slick of plum lipstick for extra style points.
AW19 grunge doesn’t have to dominate your outfits if you’re not accustomed to it.
Being new to the notion, you can always luxe it up by swapping a plaid shirt for a razor-sharp tailored blazer, for example. You could also avoid the scruffy-looking Converse and opt for chunky clean trainers instead.
And the best way to scream “I’m with the rock band”? Oversized, mirrored sunglasses. You’re welcome.
AW19 grunge can be channelled through fashion. However, more importantly, it’s a frame of mind.
Mix and match pieces according to what works alongside your personal style. And if you don’t feel comfortable wearing something, then don’t wear it.
After all, the best way to pull off a gorgeous grunge look is with the “I don’t give a damn” attitude.
