It’s almost December, which means that the Christmas party season is upon us.
Whether you’re heading to a black tie affair or going out for a few casual drinks with your colleagues, it’s important that your party wear stands out for all the right reasons.
However, it’s got to be appropriate for the occasion. I mean, no one wants to flash their boss too much flesh – am I right?
Whatever you’re doing, there are some outfit choices that will allow you to feel comfortable and confident in order to be your best self at the event. Read on to discover what to wear to a work Christmas party.
What to wear to a work Christmas party where the theme is dress to impress 101: an elegant one-piece.
Whether it’s a dress or jumpsuit, a tasteful one-piece works pretty well for those occasions where your workplace has hired out a function room for the entire company to eat, drink and dance (in no particular order).
In fact, why not opt for sequins, metallics or glittery fabric as per the sparkle and shine trend of autumn/winter 2018? Just make sure that your dress isn’t too short or your jumpsuit’s neckline isn’t too revealing to create the best impression amongst your workmates.
I mean, just because you’re outside of the work environment, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t act in a professional manner. Trust me, I’ve been there. Think about this stuff now and you’ll get to avoid the red face later!
If you’re wondering what to wear to a work Christmas party that’s not as dressy, like dinner and drinks, then consider this.
Pick one key piece that makes a statement, such as animal print flared trousers, and then play down the rest of your outfit with understated separates, such as a plain blouse in a single solid hue and a complimentary-coloured aviator jacket.
(Not sure what’s considered a “statement” piece? In addition to a bold print or pattern, your statement piece might consist of an autumn/winter fabric like velvet or leather-look PVC, a seasonal hue or a reflective lame finish.)
Alternatively, if you want your top to take center stage, choose a demure midi-length skirt that’s bang on trend for AW18.
Either way, finish off your look with heeled sandals or boots for a stylish yet sassy ensemble.
Wondering what to wear to a work Christmas party as a beginner? Well, you can never go wrong with jeans and a nice top.
(Unless your jeans are ripped, tie-dye or embroidered, in which case, you’ve failed miserably.)
Super casual gatherings, like a post-work drink with colleagues or an in-house Christmas-themed lunch, might call for the ol’ jeans-and-a-nice-top pairing.
What do I mean by “nice top,” I hear you ask?
I’m talking about a feminine cami or shirt that’s just as cute as it is chic. You know, the kind that you can put with a sharp-looking pair of black or blue denim jeans and appear instantly sophisticated? Yes, that kind. Warehouse (*) has some super adorable ones at the moment.
The jeans and a nice top combo is always a winner in life, therefore, it’ll be a winner for your work’s Christmas do too. Fact.
Finally, sometimes it can be difficult to work out what to wear to a work Christmas party when it isn’t really a party at all.
These are the occasions where your boss just wants to grab a quick Chrismassy lunch out of the office the next day or take your clients to dinner to celebrate another successful year of working together – and you’re kind of still working but kind of not.
For these types of events, it’s best to dress professionally like you would on any given work day, but step it up a notch.
For example, why not grab a matching two-piece tailored suit? Whether this is a blazer and skirt or jacket and trousers combo, this outfit is practical for a work environment yet fashionable.
If you feel like this look is too serious, simply amp up the playful factor with a printed top underneath the jacket or a colour-clashing handbag.
Now, that’s what I call power dressing as its finest.
Figuring out what to wear for a work Christmas party can be challenging. After all, you want to turn some heads without being inappropriate, as you’ll have to face these people everyday once the event is over!
As well as the outfit itself, make sure that you use your makeup, hairstyle and accessories to add interest. If you don’t feel dressy enough, throw on a pair of sparkly earrings or a statement necklace. Similarly, if you feel too dressy, mute down your outfit with simplistic delicate jewellery.
Either way, try out different options until you find the best fashion choices for you. And don’t be afraid to go for something outside of your comfort zone – I mean, it’s Christmas and pretty much anything goes. Right?
