Is Edinburgh Worth Visiting? In A Word: Yes

April 20, 2017

Once you’ve got the travel bug, it’s kind of difficult to get rid of. (Not that you’d want to!)

I’d only been home for a couple of weeks post-Wisconsin when I felt the sudden urge to do some more exploring. That and leaving my American boyfriend is always tough so I was up for a weekend getaway with the sister to turn my frown upside down.

I’d been to the Scottish city once before late last Summer and came home absolutely buzzing. If you’re wondering is Edinburgh worth visiting? I’m here to tell you why the answer is yes, yes! A thousand times yes!

1. It Has a Great Atmosphere

Not only does Edinburgh look pretty with an abundance of old stone buildings, park greenery and (of course) the castle perched on its mound overlooking the city, but it also feels… Well, alive.

What I mean by that is there are people everywhere, much like London, from all corners of the globe. It’s such a touristic place but it differs from London City Centre in the sense that it doesn’t feel too overcrowded.

It’s hard to explain unless you’ve been there yourself, but there’s just a really good vibe about it!

2. There’s Lots to Do

There’s so much to do and see in Edinburgh, which is a challenge when you’re only there for a couple of nights.

However, it’s definitely worth the trip. From coastal walks to bar-hopping and soaking up the Scottish heritage, there’s something available to suit every age and taste.

Not to mention, the drive up to Scotland from Yorkshire on the A1 along the coastline is super scenic and jaw-dropping.

3. The Layout is Unique

Is Edinburgh worth visiting? Well, for me, the layout is the number one reason why.

The Old Town, including the Castle, sits at the top of the hill and overlooks the New Town where all the high street shops are. Then the Princes Street Gardens are in between, which means the layout is extremely distinctive yet walkable.

That said, make sure you wear comfy shoes when you visit the city as the hills can really take it out of you! I felt like I’d lost a stone in a matter of a weekend.

4. The Castle is Extraordinary

My sister had a full day of sightseeing on the Saturday, which naturally had to include the castle.

It’s oozing with history, perfectly preserved and truly spectacular.

Plus, it was a beautiful, bright, sunshiny day, we ventured to the top and we couldn’t help but be awestruck at the breathtaking views.

5. The Nightlife is Fun

In addition to all of the above, the nightlife in Edinburgh is amazing!

First, you have The Dome, a fancy bar and restaurant with an interior that looks like the inside of Gringotts Bank (hey, Harry Potter fans!) You also have an abundance of live music bars in Old Town that are so much fun featuring some super talented bands.

Either way, there’s a bar or pub for everyone to enjoy.

Is Edinburgh Worth Visiting? The Truth

All in all, I can’t help but feel that Edinburgh is truly a babe and one of my favourite places I’ve visited so far in the whole wide world!

I’d heartily recommend it to anyone for a unique weekend getaway.

I’m sure I’ll be back again soon. But until then – it’s been real, Edinburgh.
